MonkeyPod Glossary
- 1099-NEC
A type of tax return used to report when certain non-employees are compensated for their work. MonkeyPod can generate an export for e-filing these at tax time.
- Account
The most basic way of categorizing your financial activity and position. Accounts must have one of the following types: Asset, Liability, Net Asset, Income, or Expense.
- Accrual Accounting
Accounting for grownups! Accrual accounting is a method of accounting whereby revenue and expenses are recorded when transactions occur, rather than when payment is received or made. Accrual accounting is a little more complicated than the alternative (cash accounting), but the information it provides is much more useful in practice. Accrual accounting is the accounting method supported by MonkeyPod.
- Action Item
Action items are tasks that you create, track, assign, and manage in MonkeyPod. Each action item has a simple description, but they may also include things like file attachments, references to dependent action items (i.e. prerequisites), and more.
- Apps Marketplace
The MonkeyPod Apps Marketplace contains options for extending MonkeyPod's core functionality, often by integrating it with a third-party platform.
- Asset Account
Asset accounts are used for tracking the things of value that your organization owns. They can be relatively tangible, like a bank account, or a bit more theoretical, such as a pledge that has been made but not yet received.
- Budget Rollup
Budget rollups allow you to create and track multiple budgets that are related but should be considered in isolation from each other. To create a budget rollup, first create the underlying budgets. They should have the same basic scope (i.e. organization, class, or grant). If they're organization-wide or relate to the same class or grant, they should cover different, non-overlapping timeframes. Alternatively, different classes or grants may be budgeted over the same timeframe. After creating the budgets, you can create a budget rollup that combines them all into a "rolled up" composite budget.
- CSV
Short for comma-separated-values. CSV files are a kind of plain text file that can be exported from Excel or Google Sheets. They are the primary supported import format for MonkeyPod.
- Campaign (Email)
A single email sent to an email list or a segment of an email list.
- Cash Accounting
A method of accounting based on the timing of payments rather than their underlying transactions. Cash accounting is a little simpler than the alternative (accrual accounting), but it tends to present a misleading and incomplete picture of your finances. Cash accounting is not supported by MonkeyPod and (in our not-so-humble opinion) not practiced by mature, self-respecting organizations.
- Chart of Accounts
Your list of accounts, including current balances and options for account-related actions like reconciling or merging accounts.
- Classes
Whenever you spend money, you must assign a class to track the purpose (what an accountant might call the "functional category") of the expenditure. In MonkeyPod, classes may optionally be used to track most kinds of income as well.
- Connections
Connections are used to track your relationship network — specifically how those relationships are connected to each other. MonkeyPod comes with a number of basic default connection types (e.g., for marriage, employment, etc.) but you are free to add your own as well.
- Credit Memo
A credit memo is used to provide a "credit" to one of your customers, which can then be applied to an open invoice or saved to apply toward future invoices.
- Custom Attribute
Custom Attributes are used to track information about your relationships that MonkeyPod doesn't track by default. They can be used for everything from short text fields to file uploads.
- Dashboard
Your own personalized MonkeyPod homepage, the dashboard presents a group of "widgets" that highlight the information that matters to you. Each user's dashboard is configurable to include whatever widgets you want (and to exclude the ones you don't).
- Donation Option
Each fundraising page hosted by MonkeyPod must include one or more donation options. Donation options determine the parameters by which a donation may be made (e.g., minimum amounts, pre-set amount options, monthly vs. one-time, etc.)
- EFT/ACH
EFT stands for "electronic funds transfer" and is a generic term for any kind of electronic payment. ACH specifically refers to the "Automated Clearing House Network", which is one type of EFT.
- Email List
A group of relationships for receiving certain types of marketing communications, such as a newsletter. Lists may generally be kept fairly broad, as you can always choose a sub-segment when sending a specific campaign.
- Eventbrite
An event management and ticketing service that integrates with MonkeyPod (by installing the Eventbrite app in the MonkeyPod App Marketplace).
